Silver Birch Class Curriculum Letter Summer Term 21
Welcome back! After a most surprising summer term, it’s really good to see all the children back in school again looking so well and ready to learn. We’re excited to be back, and we’d also like to welcome Miss Davy to our teaching team, who’ll be teaching alongside me this year.
Below we have outlined what will be studied this term. We have also included some other information you might find useful. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
In English we will spend the first half term developing our non-fiction writing as we write about mysterious animals and invent new gadgets. We will enjoy some poetry by Black British authors, and after half term, focus on narrative writing with a unit of work on spooky stories including Clockwork, The Listeners and A Christmas Carol. We will continue our study of sentence grammar and weekly spellings. Children are expected to read at least five times a week at home, and we will be checking reading records on a Monday. Please encourage your child to record their reading each night.
In Maths we will continue to follow the Inspire scheme of work, continuing from where we left off at Easter. Year 5 will be working on improper fractions, angles, perpendicular and parallel lines, and geometry of squares and rectangles. Year 6 will learn to calculate the area of a triangle, begin to understand ratio, and use decimals to thousandths including in measurements. I’m pleased to say most children have remembered their times tables well, but do continue to practise to keep these sharp.
In Science children will be studying diet and lifestyle, followed by light and how we see.
In Computing the children will be developing their computational thinking and beginning to understand how a network functions.
The Geography topic is all about maps – why and how people make them, what they can tell us about their authors, and how to follow them to get where you need to be.
In Art we will be learning about different ways to show movement through art, particularly exploring the Futurist school, and using drawing and printing to develop our ideas.
Design Technology takes a look at Chinese inventions, and their contribution to our world.
In R.E we will learn why the 5 Pillars of Islam are so important to Muslims, and then look at Christian ideas about God, and what it means for God to be both holy and loving.
In French we’ll be developing sentence structures to talk about ourselves in present and future tense.
Part of our PSHE is linked to our science work on healthy lifestyles, and we will learn about a healthy body image. We will strengthen our commitment to fight bullying, and continue our ongoing discussions about how we manage our emotions effectively, especially with all the changes and challenges of the current time.
Silver Birch class will have P.E on a Monday and Thursday. Please send children to school in their PE kits, including joggers and sweatshirt if it’s chilly.
All homework this term will be given out and taken in via Google Classroom. Please contact the school if you are unable to log in or if there are any other problems. The children have been given a homework book for work done on paper, and these pages should be submitted as a photo. Other work can be completed directly online. The children will receive Maths and English every week, and all assignments can be seen in Google Classroom. No more lost homework sheets! I will add the spellings if you wish to do extra practice at home.
Children should bring in their own water bottles as there is no longer access to the fountain.. Please ensure the bottle has your child’s name on it.
