Oak Class Curriculum Letter Summer 2021
Oak Class Curriculum Provision –Summer Term 2021
Welcome to the start of the Summer Term. I am very excited to be back with the children after the recent lockdown. We have much planned for the term ahead with fun, laughter, learning and hopefully a little sun to look forward to! Below is an outline of our learning for the new term, as well as some important information.
In English we will start the term focusing on narrative writing and dilemma stories. We are using the story of The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry as our inspiration. We will be learning how to use persuasive techniques to change the mind of our main characters, how to correctly use direct speech and how to create a suitable resolution to a dilemma. Later on in the term, we will be using the information we have learnt in our topic work to create information texts which we hope to publish using the ipads.
We will also have weekly spellings to learn which will be set as part of the weekly homework, our spellings tests will take place on a Monday afternoon. It is very important that children continue to read each night for at least 20 to 30 minutes. Children should record their reading in their diaries. Dairies will be checked weekly and books changed as necessary. Please make sure that reading books are in school every day.
In Maths we are following the White Rose scheme. In Year 3 we will be focusing on multiplication and division with the introduction of formal written methods as well as using learnt number knowledge. We will then move onto money, length and perimeter and fractions. In Year 4 we will also start the term with a focus on multiplication and division. We will consolidate our knowledge of formal written methods, as well as reasoning skills. We will then move onto area, fractions and finally decimals. We will continue to learn key number facts such as timetables. These are a key focus area for all of Oak this term. Please encourage your children to practise at home with you, as well as logging into Times Tables Rockstars. There will be some tournaments coming up this term so please look out for those!
In Science we will be learning about living things and how they can be grouped and classified. In the second half of the term, we move onto human nutrition, with the focus being the digestive system and teeth! This learning will be put to the test by linking with DT where children will be learning all about seasonal food and how to cook it!
In Computing we will be learning how to use a green screen in the iMovie app. We will also be using iMovie to create movies and news clips linked to our topic work.
In History we are learning all about the Mayans through studying timelines of key events, studying artefacts, learning how this ancient civilization lived as well as creating our own Mayan masks.
In Art we are learning about the famous artist Seurat and pointillism. We will be learning different techniques and using these to create our own pointillism masterpieces!
In RE we are studying the teachings of Jesus with the focus being around the parables that Jesus told and the messages within them. We will then move on to learn about Buddhism in the second half of term.
In French we are completing a unit of work around food and asking for our preferences. This links in with our next unit of shopping.
For PHSCE we are starting with a SRE unit of work where we are learning about the human life cycle. We will consider what we believe it may be like to be an adult and have responsibilities such as helping babies and children, and how these change as we grow older.
PE takes place on Monday and Wednesday. Please make sure that your child comes to school in a full PE kit. Monday’s lesson will be Yoga and Wednesday’s lesson will be sports skills.
Homework in English, Maths and Topic continues to be set each Friday using Google classroom. Spellings will be given on a Monday ready for the following week. Please make sure that your child submits their homework on time. Work should be completed no later than Wednesday so that it can be marked.
Please make sure that your child comes to school with a water bottle, especially as we move into the warmer weather. Should your child finish their water and need a refill this can be done using the classroom tap. All water bottles should be taken home each day, cleaned and refilled ready for the next school day.
Thank you for your continued support in what has been a very unusual year. We are very proud of all that Oak class has achieved and the resilience that they have shown. We are very much looking forward to the term ahead and the opportunities we have planned for the children. Should you have any questions or concerns then please do get in contact with the office and we will be happy to help in any way we can.
