Willow Class Curriculum Letter Summer Term 2021
Welcome to the Summer Term! Thank you for making me feel so welcome in Willow Class – I am really looking forward to the rest of this term. Our theme for learning is “Over Land and Sea.” Here is an outline the curriculum:
English We will continue our daily phonics sessions. Children will get spellings on a Friday for a test on the following Friday. These will be posted in Google Classroom. We will be reading lots of books connected to the seaside including “The Pirates Next Door”, “How to Find Gold”, “Seahorse” and “The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch” and a range of non-fiction texts. We are in the middle of writing a pirate adventure story. We are working on our stamina to enable us to write longer pieces of work with good sentence structure and powerful word choices.
Reading In addition to class work, we will hear each child read their book at least once a week. If your child needs to change their book, they can put it, along with their reading record, in the book change basket. The best way to help your child make progress is to read with them for 10 minutes every night – do encourage them to change their book if they have the same one repeatedly.
Maths We will continue to follow the White Rose scheme of work, as the children have got used to this through remote learning. Y1 will be covering weight and volume, introducing multiplication, division, and basic fractions. Y2 will be starting with multiplication and division and moving onto shape and fractions. We will also be working on our number bonds.
Science We will be learning about the needs of animals and how we can look after them well. We will also learn about some amazing sea creatures.
Computing The children will learn how to use an art package, and how to take excellent digital photos.
Art We will be exploring different types of seaside-related drawing and painting.
Music We will be listening to and playing some reggae music, as well as loads of singing, especially sea shanties.
History We will learn about the history of seaside holidays and how they have changed over time from Victorian times to the present day.
Geography We will be making and using different kinds of maps, including treasure maps, of course!
Design Technology We will look at different types of houses and homes, and we will design and build a house especially for a pirate. We will also explore different kinds of vehicles and transport.
R.E We will be discussing what the parable of the Prodigal Son tells us about God, and looking at how people’s faith influences the way they live their lives.
PSHE We work will teach us how to be safe with medicines and other substances we might find at home.
PE Our P.E coach comes in on a Wednesday afternoon, so you will need P.E kit on a Wednesday. We will also have a dance lesson with Mrs Harper, but the day of that will change depending on circumstances. A P.E kit will not be needed for that lesson.
We will also have Forest School on a Wednesday, and lots of outside activities and play, so we will make sure the children get enough exercise.
Homework Will be set on a Friday on Google Classroom. There will be maths, spellings and one other task. Please let me know if you have any trouble receiving or completing the homework.
I look forward to seeing you at parents’ evening,
